How many years is a person required to work before qualifing for Social Security benefits?
Rcubed asked:
A friend of mine has immigrated to this country and she is 62 years old. Some people have advised her not to work and wait until she is 67 years old to apply for Social Security benefits. Otherwise, if she worked, she had to wait 10 years to qualify. Is it true, or I am advising my friend wrong when I am advising her to look for a job?

Anyone born in 1929 or later needs 10 years of work (40 credits) to be eligible for retirement benefits. People born before 1929 need fewer years of work.
Check link in “source” for details and exceptions.

She has to work for 10 years to qualify to receive SS. If she doesn’t work and pay in to SS,she will get nothing at age 67. You can’t take out of the system if you haven’t put anything in.

Ten years (40 qualifying quarters… about $1,000 per quarter starting in 2007 somewhat lower before) are required to qualify for Social Security. Additionally, if she doesn’t work the 10 years her Medicare premium will be much, much higher.
For other options (5 years) for some people see this site to see if she qualifies (I doubt it)….

She has to have worked ten years (40 quarters) and have paid in to Social Security in order to receive Social Security. If not, then she is not eligible.
I am assuming that she is legally in this country and pays taxes.
One has to pay into it in order to receive it.
