When you are hurt on the job you ordinarily draw worker’s comp. If you are injured badly enough to be permanently disabled then you’d draw social security disability and the worker’s comp would stop.
Your dad may have also had a disability insurance (short term or long term) through the company he was working for. That would not necessarily stop when he began to draw social security. You would have to look at the terms of the insurance policy.
The initial consulatation with a lawyer is ordinarily free for most lawyers. Your dad may want to talk to a lawyer if he has not already.

maybe I am wrong but it strikes me that an individual does NOT receive disability benefits from any employer but from the government… the same government that pays social security benefits… which I believe would answer your questions as to why the disability benefits ended when the social security benefits kicked in… because the same place (the government) is not going to pay anyone for both.

Your dad was receiving sickness pay, benefits from an employer provided disability policy or workmen’s comp. Those usually only last 6 months to a year and they may stop payment when he is receiving SS. You would have to talk to the employer or read the policies to find out what the conditions were. But they probably have it right. Sometimes people are lucky enough to have them overlap for awhile, but usually not for very long – if at all.

Generally a person goes on short term disability with their employer first and then long term disability. Usually once you go on long term disability the employer requires you to file for Social Security disability. When the SS disability begins the employers disability is usually stopped or reduced drastically. It all depends on the employer’s disability program.
