Can Welfare demand an x amount back from foodstamps they give you if you are awarded Social Security benefits?
gabe asked:
I have been receiving foodstamps from my state for a few years now due to being disabled. But I have recently been approve to start receiving Social Security Disability, and Suplemental Security Income. Furthermore, it turns out that Social Security owes me back-pay dating back those few years while I was receiving foodstamps. I have recently applied to receive Qualified Medicare Beneficiary which is also carried by my state. Now, my Welfare caseworker wants me to hand over all of the docements that Social Security has sent me in connection to my benefits, and all information about my back pay benefits. Can my Welfare caseworker turn around and demand me to pay back Welfare for the foodstamps they gave me for those few years? My caseworker and I have a history of arguments about her attitude toward me, and the way she handles my case. So I need to know from you, if you think or know whether or not what she may be thinking about doing is legitament and legal.

The back is the pay you did not receive for those months while you had been receiving foodstamps. Had you been receiving the social security you would not have been qualified to receive the same amount of food stamps – so to receive the back pay and to have received the social security back pay is “double dipping”.
You will be required to pay a percentage of that money back with the back pay you receive from SSD and SSI.

You need to call an attorney that handles Social Security problems. Look in the yellow pages of your telephone directory. \
I do not think they can. Maybe a percentage but it would ease your mind if you knew your rights.
Don’t let this case worker not explain everything to you. She is obligated to do so, and get advice from your attorney asap so she doesn’t take advantage of you.
Make her write everything down that she says to you and give you a copy. Tell her you can understand it better if you can read it for yourself. Then tell her to give you a few days.
an attorney will sometimes give you a consultation over the telephone…goof luck to you.

yes – there is a change in your income
i am really not sure abut this matter .. it is really good idea to get an attorney involved ?
the issue is that you will probably get a large sum of cash . when you get the cash / they may want to stop the food stamps once you have money .
you will probably have to reapply / qualify .
they usually want people to be pretty broke before they give out the food vouchers
can you look at your state requirements ?
i don’t know anyone that has ever said anything positive about government caseworkers. i hear that the system is a nightmare / there is lots of fraud / workers have too many cases are stressed .
i would keep lots of copies and not get into too many argument s. you have to bite your tongue sometimes in life. you already have an entire beauracratic system fighting you .. last problem you need is a government employee with an attitude that is P’d off at you

If you’re going to be getting a few years of back pay, that will be a windfall! So I wouldn’t complain if you have to pay back the public benefits you got. I thought most welfare had to be paid back?
Social Security Benefits
Yes, they can. You’re getting back pay from one so you shouldn’t complain when they want to balance the books. You can’t have it both ways. It’s for the needy, not the greedy.
Social Security Benefits
Yes they can. The same thing happened to my parents and they had to pay for food stamps they had gottem.
You should only have to pay back any cash you were getting if you were just getting food stamps then no.I know this for a fact because I just got approved for SSI an only payed back the cash they gave me I still get to keep my food stamps.
