Can i collect unemployment benefits while collecting social security benefits in California?
patti asked:
I was laid off from my job March 6, 2009 filed my claim in March but didn’t start collecting it until June. At that time I was 64, so I filed for social security to. Because i was not 66 I am limited on what I can earn. My unemployment was going to be over that amount, so when I talked to social security, they said that unemployment is not considered earned income. But does unemployment consider social security earned income?

I think the appropriate question is not whether social security is considered earned income but whether you are being fully compliant with unemployment rules that may require you to say you are ready, willing and able to engage in full time employment. It may be inconsistent for you to collect unemployment while applying for full time work and, at the same time, collecting retirement benefits.
