Can a Permanently Disabled Veteran collect any Social Security Benefits ?
J Andy A asked:
I was hospitalized at a Military Hospital in 1979, and was subsequently given an Honorable Discharge. The VA granted me a Service Connected Disability at 100% which was deemed as Permanent 100% in 1989.

I am now 58 years old and with all the rising costs of living, the VA Disability Income is not meeting all my living expenses. Is a person in this situation qualified to receive any Social Security Benefits ?

If you are unable to hold a job because of your disability, you should qualify.

You would have to contact them and see, the VA Disability is not supposed to be a catch all income, just supplemental, same with SS!

It is possible. There are too many factors involved in determining your eligibility. You would need to go and talk to your local social security office. One thing though, Social Security’s definition of disabled is a lot more stringent than the military’s disability requirements.

If you have worked enough years you are in titled to receive it
.
And check with your state in getting a free Disabled Veteran license plate that is issued to you free of charge
.
If you own a home get with the local country auditors office in getting a lower home tax rate

Have you contributed to the social security system? If so, you would get a set amount. You should be getting occasional letters from the SSA showing how much you would qualify for at age 63 and 64.
If you have contributed, you might be eligible for SSDI, but it does usually several years to get it, and you might get “too much” from your VA disability to qualify.

It depends if you paid in sufficient quarters and what your present insured status is. You would have had to work at least 5 of the last ten years or have documentation to prove disability back further. Old medical records are ofter hard to get. Given your age though a claim for DIB can be relatively easy if you are eligible. Please feel free to call my office for a completely free consultation. We represent clients all over the nation in Social Security claims. Your VA disability should weigh heavily with the SSA.
