If social security is your only income, it isn't taxable. The only way you could get a refund is if you had taxes withheld from your benefits check - then you could file and get it all back. I'm not sure why you'd want to do that, but it's technically possible to do.

Unless your husband was military you have three choices to obtain his W-2 1. you can contact his former place of work and request a copy, 2. you can see if there is still a copy of his W-2 with the last taxes he filed which would be at your home, or if you threw it out 3. contact the IRS. You will need his full name, date of birth, social insurance number but they will tell you everything that you need...it will take a bit of time though.

I think the appropriate question is not whether social security is considered earned income but whether you are being fully compliant with unemployment rules that may require you to say you are ready, willing and able to engage in full time employment. It may be inconsistent for you to collect unemployment while applying for full time work and, at the same time, collecting retirement benefits.

<a href="http://www.social-security-benefits.net">Social Security Benefits</a>

You have to file a tax return if your annual income is above a threshold specified by law for your situation. In some cases a portion of Social Security benefits may be subject to tax. It depends on the total income you have. If Social Security is your only income, you may not be subject to any income tax. Fill out the tax return and it will tell you if you owe anything.

If Social Security is your only income it is not taxable. Since it's not taxable there is no need to file. Unless you had income taxes withheld from your Social Security payments, there's nothing to be refunded and no need to file.

<a href="http://www.social-security-benefits.net">Social Security Benefits</a>

If you are asking about the rebate, do not include SSI on your Form 1040A if you are filing solely for the rebate. SSI does not count towards the $3000 in "qualifying income" you need to receive a rebate. Social security retirement and disability do count and should be included on your 1040A.
